Pierre Bellégo, a Catholic priest, was born in 1913. He was ordained in 1938 and died in 1995. These few dates alone mark out a period in the life of the Church that is rich in all kinds of events and strengthened by an exceptional missionary revival, but also marked by many paradoxes. Pierre Bellégo belongs to that generation of priests - many of them still with us – for whom their mission was to announce the Gospel in a world which, by traditional standards, was moving away from Christianity. The major event in the life of this priest, and in those of his peers, was the celebration of the Vatican II council: long awaited, desired, eagerly prepared and accomplished with fervour. A few words suffice to describe Pierre Bellégo’s pastoral profile: “What can I do for your service?” That was the question he asked his parishioners in Saint-Séverin-Saint—Nicolas du-Chardonnet when he arrived in 1974. Service – that was the interrogation of his entire life – when he was a prisoner, a university chaplain in Caen, Dean of Vassy (in the Normandy ‘Bocage’, after the bishop demanded his resignation), curate of Saint-Sulpice where he experienced May 1968, priest of Saint-Séverin-Saint-Nicolas, until he was expelled by the traditionalists on February 27, 1974. Curate of Saint-Vincent-de-Paul from 1980 onwards, he died in 1995. His writings are those of a pastor; they reveal his spiritual generosity, his demanding love of the Church and his deep attachment to “Christ Jesus”. Jacques Depauw’s book couldn’t come at a better time, when the Church is devoting a year of reflection to the presbiterial ministry. He introduces us to a figure of priesthood - not only by telling the story of his life – but by permitting him to speak through many texts selected from his works.
