The Fathers of the Church received the name ‘abba’ from their communities, a sign of recognition of their vivifying role. They strove to achieve the unity of those communities and develop the ecclesiology of communion, emanating from the Scriptures: the ecclesiology to which we are returning today. Even if they did not found the Church, which comes from the Trinity, they nevertheless shaped and edified it from outside and inside, basing their work on Christ’s teaching as it was transmitted to us by the Apostles. They gave it a structure, established the ministries, organized the liturgy and introduced sacramental symbolism... They gave a central place to the Pascal mystery, around which they constructed the liturgical year. The Fathers were indeed builders of the Church in their times, following on from the Apostles; they also gave it direction, so providing momentum for their successors. As we read them, we are like the scribe in the Gospels ‘who brings out of his storeroom new treasures as well as old’ (Mt 13, 52) to create the ecclesiology of the 21st century. This facet of patristic research, still largely unexplored, was the subject of a colloquium at the University of Metz in March 2008, whose proceedings we present here.
