It is less of a challenge to present Saint Thomas Aquinas as a philosopher than Saint Augustine. Generalizations are not always false; if there is one that speaks true it is certainly the distinction St. Thomas makes between faith and reason, theology and philosophy... On the condition, however, that we bear in mind that these two disciplines are only distinguished in order to unite them - if not in their principles, their methods and results - at least in a comprehensive vision of wisdom. This uninhibited philosophy turns out to be first class. It convinces by its speculative force and clarity, and has been reaching an ever-increasing audience in the last few years. This volume is devoted to the philosophy of Saint Thomas. It covers most of the principal domains upon which Thomas has imposed his ideas, taking in the traditions he made his own (Aristotle, Neoplatonician) and which he transcends with an original synthesis: the philosophy of knowledge, metaphysics, God, ethics, politics. It does not refuse interaction with the domains of theology, the Scriptures and mysticism; and explores some of the most unexpected recesses of Thomas’s philosophy, its links with other medieval doctrines and the influence it wields on modern literature. The ensemble bears witness to the very latest academic results obtained by a new generation of researchers, presented with a carefully pedagogical approach. Such a collective work on the philosophy of Thomas Aquinas has been long awaited.
