Collection Les Cahiers d'Histoire de la Philos
720 pages - nov. 2011
Some, people may be surprised to see the ‘Cahiers’, whose titles are all tried and tested works whose literary and philosophical perpetuity is assured, devote a volume to a figure who has not yet been consecrated by one of the official dictionaries. Yet by devoting a book to the work of this man, who died all too young five years ago, we are simply gaining time without taking the slightest risk, as pioneers of our trade. A short time ago, Philippe Muray was a man loved or hated, with the same fervour, yet his name remained little known by the public. Admirers of Muray may feel less misunderstood today, but there are still many stereotypes to be swept away, while others are formed by the man’s growing success. Even better: Muray’s fame is spreading; the powers that be have caught on to his genius, which is why it is necessary to start thinking. For today, as yesterday, Philippe Muray’s writing is still not appreciated in its full signification or in the diversity of its registers. He is often admired for superficial reasons that veil the profundity of his works. ‘A brilliant pen, no doubt about it’; ‘a rare style’; ‘ a humorist with class’, say the majority: so displaying that very passivity he has often denounced. The time has come to lay the first stone of a construction of meditative vigilance, which accepts Muray as the object of its thought. Rich in the variety of forty contributors, who have been sensitive to Muray’s writings in different ways, and several texts from the unpublished ‘Journal’ of Muray himself, this book aims to prove what a great writer Murray is, and to provide a perennial interlocutor for thinkers.
