Truth emerges at the heart of the Gospel from Jesus’ message: "Truth will set you free" (Jn 8, 32). But truth can also be sought in the name of the human condition by men of good faith in quest of sincerity, authenticity, truth... It is with us every day, every moment of our lives, in all situations: from the psychoanalyst’s couch to the confessional, with the philosophy student and the person in a retreat, the teenager and the old man... It bursts forth from our humanity to the rhythm of unanswered questions, anxiety and ordeals; or when we have to face suffering we cannot easily attribute to our body, our soul or our spirit. Desire is the source of our elan towards God. It is expressed in spiritual and mystical literature in many different ways, and is characterized today by certain features linked to the evolution of our society, to the multiform encounters of cultures and religions, to secularization. Where does this desire spring from? Recent research indicates that man’s spiritual dimension could "originate" in early childhood, in the human being’s most archaic state. These diverse pages from theologians and psychoanalysts do not claim to provide answers; but they do permit us to study these questions at the crossroads of the therapy, spirituality, theology and philosophy.
