C'est à la nuit de briser la nuit

A writer who left us too soon, Vincent La Soudière (1939-1993) published only a collection of poetic prose entitled ‘Chroniques antérieures’ (Fata Morgana) during his lifetime, not enough to convey any idea of the extent of his production. Henri Michaux, his friend, said of him, “I know he’ll never write anything just for writing’s sake. What he wants to make known matters.” This little-known author has left many fragments of writing, the most important being a poignant testimony of his interior journey, to be found in his rich correspondence with his friend Didier. Few events marked his life, which takes the form of a relentless quest for inner truth carried out with the desperate zeal of an alchemist. “For the night must break the night. And from that deadly impetus will emerge a white rope ladder, to climb beyond terror”. In this first volume, covering ten of thirty years’ correspondence, Vincent La Soudière seeks existential salvation through the writing of a book, like many of his predecessors in literature. However, his quest was to undergo a radical transformation which took it from rebellion to faith. His testimony appears in the following volumes.
