Familles et société : quels choix pour demain ?

The family is always in the news. All surveys show overwhelming support for the family, even if families now come in all shapes and sizes. On the initiative of the Conseil Famille et Société de la Conférence des Évêques de France, a symposium was held on 1-2 October, 2011, at the Cité Universitaire de Paris. The participants conducted a profound, open, interdisciplinary and well-documented reflection on the subject, as becomes clear when we read the contributions assembled here. The authors explore, verify and highlight the richness represented by families and their indispensable social role. The challenge for both society and the Church is to find a way of sustaining this human institution, undermined today. Let the reader make no mistake: the fruits of this colloquium are directly in line with the intellectual heritage of John Paul II, developing a Trinitarian anthropology as well as resolutely proclaiming the Church’s social ideas about the family. ‘This twofold dimension is typical of her teaching in the social sphere. On the one hand it is constant, for it remains identical in its fundamental inspiration, in its "principles of reflection," in its "criteria of judgment," in its basic "directives for action," and above all in its vital link with the Gospel of the Lord. On the other hand, it is ever new, because it is subject to the necessary and opportune adaptations suggested by the changes in historical conditions and by the unceasing flow of the events which are the setting of the life of people and society.’ (Sollicitudo rei socialis, n° 3, 30 December 1987). These pages bear witness to an important moment in the elaboration of the Church’s social thinking as regards the family. They are infused with the conviction that the family is good news for humanity, and represents great hope for all of us.
