[Ph. C.-D.] -- We are pleased to present the first ‘Anthology’ of texts treating the relations between philosophy and theology. In keeping with the spirit of the ‘Philosophie & Théologie’ collection, it illustrates the complex and eventful history of the rapports between the two disciplines, revealing how greatly the destiny of Western thought is determined by these two sources of Biblical prophecy and Greek wisdom. Often ignored, sometimes even dissimulated, that pluralistic determination on which reason was founded is not only a vital key to understanding the history of ideas, but also to reflecting on the presuppositions of certain practices. By assembling and presenting the great texts in which philosophers and theologians tackle the question of their otherness - from the origins until the end of the 20th century - this anthology will contribute to the clarification of themes and concepts that structure the organisation of what is thinkable, and enlighten our actions. The four tomes correspond to four major historical periods. This third tome, devoted to the so-called modern period, begins with paradigmatic figures of the 16th century and closes with the last great thinker of the 19th century. Made up of twenty-eight contributions focussing on individuals (Luther, Calvin, Erasmus, Jansenius, Descartes, Pascal, Spinoza, Malebranche, Leibniz, Lessing, Kant, Fichte, Schelling, Hegel, Schleiermacher, Marx, Nietzsche...) and themes (physical theology, tensions between scepticism and theology, philosophy and mysticism, materialism and theology...), in strict chronological order, it restores the fundamental corpus, testimonies to theorizations and institutional practices of a relation that has participated intensely, in its different forms, in the development of modern thought, so opening contemporary space.
