Miroirs du prince de l'Empire romain au IVe siècle

Cette anthologie propose un choix de textes portant sur le bon gouvernement, textes rédigés en grec par des philosophes païens (Jamblique, Sopatros, Thémistios) et un théologien chrétien (Eusèbe de Césarée) au IVe siècle après J.-C., à une époque charnière de l'empire romain, une période de transition entre le monde gréco-romain et les débuts des civilisations médiévales (latine, byzantine et arabe). La plupart des textes sont traduits pour la première fois en langue moderne (Jamblique, Sopatros) ou pour la première fois en français (Thémistios). Les introductions et les notes qui accompagnent les textes les situent dans le cadre de leur époque, de leurs rapports les uns avec les autres, et de leur enracinement dans la philosophie politique de l'Antiquité. Cette sélection de textes permet d'observer différents courants de pensée portant sur ce que serait le bon gouvernement ; sur ce qui fait qu'un roi soit bon ; sur les qualités morales et intellectuelles, les responsabilités et les fonctions du meilleur gouvernant ; sur le sens de la politique.

This anthology brings us a selection of texts about good government, written in Greek by pagan philosophers (Jamblicus, Sopatros, Themistius) and a Christian theologian (Eusebius of Caesarea) in the 4th century, a crucial time for the Roman Empire and a period of transition between the Greco-Roman world and the beginnings of Medieval civilisations (Latin, Byzantine and Arab). Most of these texts are translated for the first time into a modern language (Jamblicus, Sopatros) or for the first time into French (Themistius). The accompanying introductions and notes place the texts in the context of their times, in their rapports with each other, revealing their roots in the political philosophy of Antiquity. The selection permits us to observe different schools of thought about what good government may be; on what makes a good king; on the moral and intellectual qualities, the responsibilities and the functions of the best rulers; on the meaning of politics.
