As the commemorations of Vatican II begin, Joseph Famerées book, and some others, pose the question of style: haven’t we often had a tendency to ‘dogmatise’ Vatican II, while the Council itself aimed to be ‘pastoral’ in nature? In our interpretation of the conciliar texts, don’t we tend to consider their doctrinal content in itself, to separate the content from its manner of presentation, the letter from its inspiration? In other words, do we not tend to consider these texts as doctrinal writings, without taking into account the style or the theological act that brought them to us? Would it not be useful to rethink the Council as a style or a theological act, and to examine how this form of expression of faith, or this manner of practising theology, has been deployed, or not, at different times in the life of the Catholic Church over the last 40 years or more? For style is interpretation and source of interpretations. The style of Vatican II is, effectively, a way of interpreting the Scriptures and Christian tradition, a way of relating to Christ Jesus here and now, in the contemporary world. The Council’s ambition was to renew participation, bring it up to date, as did Jesus when he related both to Jewish tradition and his peers. More radically than in the texts, it is in this theological style, this way of remaining faithful to Jesus’ style, that the Council sets a normative standard and is authorized to inspire new interpretations in keeping with Christian tradition, for the Council also expects – like all things in the Tradition – to be updated and put into action precisely as an instance of theological discernment. In this book, the modernisation of that conciliar style in ethics, ecclesiology and fundamental theology are assessed.
