What has the Bible to say on the subject of peace? How does it interpret the words ‘shalom’ and ‘eirene’? ‘Bible et paix’ considers these questions. It selects twenty-six studies which are so many investigations, not only from the Old and New Testaments but also from their peripheries. These contributions demonstrate that Biblical peace is much more than a pious wish; it is exhortation and beatitude. Its characteristics are gentleness, fraternity, justice, integrity and salvation. It appertains to communication and engagement, and its terrain is life. Its fundamental nature, reflected in the semantics of its words, linguistic forms and the diversity of situations where peace gains a foothold, is approached here via the exegesis of selected texts. The literary, theological and moral facets of the theme have been presented and developed by Claude Coulot’s friends and colleagues, according to their disciplines and the specific character of each selected text.
