Human frailty, this unavoidable facet of our humanity, the condition that accompanies poverty, illness and anguish as well as love and affective relations, provokes ambivalent reactions of compassion and rejection. In a society where the values of self-sufficiency, self-control and high performance prevail, people who bear witness to our common frailty are often subjected to forms of disparagement, even discrimination. Explicitly banning the word frailty from everyday vocabulary and, if need be, from the act of healthcare, does not implicitly banish it from our lives. Fighting against the tide, the specialists assembled here assert that a society’s value is measured by its capacity to take into account the vulnerability of all its members, especially those who are in a situation of great physical, psychological, moral or spiritual precariousness.
