Pierre Claverie, a Dominican and Bishop of Oran, was assassinated on August 1st, 1996. He was conscious of giving himself to Algeria and to its people, with whom, he said ‘we have a link of friendship that nothing – not even death – could break.’ In this he wanted to be a true disciple of Christ, whose notion of the greatest love was also ‘to lay down his life for his friends’. This retreat centred on the Eucharist comprises twelve chapters that closely follow the liturgy of the mass, commenting the different stages in the light of the Gospel, the Kingdom to come and the personal engagement of Christ’s disciple. It was in the daily celebration of the mass that Pierre Claverie drew the strength to give his life as Christ did. ‘The Eucharist,’ he wrote, ‘ gives to our life its direction, its movement, its consistence. That’s why it is important to do this often and enter into it as deeply as possible, to allow yourself to be shaped by it day by day.”
