Hearers of the Word (1941) and its twin work Spirit in the World (1939) are the two philosophical portals to the theological work of Karl Rahner. For the first time, the reader has the possibility to follow the genesis of Hearers of the Word through a synoptic reading of two versions of the work: the original version of 1941 and the revised version, which we owe to Johann Baptist Metz, made in 1963. Reading the first version is not an easy task; on the contrary, it means plunging into a situation comparable to that of auditors of the series of public lectures Rahner gave in 1937 in the ‘Salzburger Hochschulwochen’, from which the work emerged. Today, as on the eve of WW2, Rahner exposes thinking and understanding that are quite unique of their kind, to which we may unhesitatingly give the fine Cartesian moniker: ‘metaphysical meditations’. “Metaphysics becomes an arduous business as soon as we try to do it rather than simply content ourselves with talking about it,’ as we read in Hearers of the Word. I would be tempted to apply the same remark to what we call the ‘deconstruction’ of metaphysics these days; it also becomes an ‘arduous business’ if we try to put it into action, rather than simply proclaiming its necessity. ‘The impatient avidity of our own subjectivity’ that Rahner deplores is not only encountered in metaphysicians, who are becoming few and far between; but also among over-hasty anti-metaphysicians.” [Jean Greisch]
