For contemporary man, identity is a fundamental question, more specifically the tensions that sometimes exist between subjects and institutions about and around this problematic. To approach this issue, we established a method: to give the floor to the players concerned, on the basis of questions about the identity of the contemporary subject, as they are posed in practice. We began our work a few years ago in the faculty of theology in Louvain-la-Neuve, working with hospitals, with a theological training course entitled: ‘Ethics and healthcare practices’. The aim was to meet, accompany, and provide tools for professionals working in healthcare institutions which are not always capable of providing support and accompaniment for their actions and convictions. Our starting point was taken directly from the healthcare context, which we wished to privilege as nourishment for our reflection. We also tried, progressively and more generally, to broaden our reflexion to include all professionals working in institutions, be they healthcare, teaching, economic and political decision making, etc. Posing the question: what link can be established today by professionals, whatever their domain of practice, with the institution that employs them? Are institutions capable of defining and communicating how they see the situation they are in, and what they want to achieve, for those they engage in their action? After listening to the ‘players’ in the field, after separating the interrogations from the ‘provocations’ to theology, we opened a more theoretical stage. Here, the aim was to give the floor to thinkers, both philosophical and theological, who have tackled the question of the identity of the subject and whose works have influenced contemporary ideas. We chose three different thinkers whose works elucidate the problematic, to think the identity of the subject: Jürgen Habermas, Stanley Hauerwas and Charles Taylor. The challenge is to establish theology as a means of accompanying the subject in search of meaning, theology as a source of meaning for human existence.
